SAVE THE DATE! JANUARY 28th, 2023 for MISSION 10 Race!
Saturday, January 29th, 2022 marked the 38th Annual Mission 10 Race in San Juan Bautista. The Rotary Club of Hollister's Mission 10 Committee had no idea what to expect after having to cancel the 2021 race due to COVID-19. It was a gamble the committee was ready to take though, to honor and ensure the tradition of the race, and to raise the important funds for scholarships and community projects. We are thrilled that our community of supporters came out in a BIG way this year! We had a record breaking event with 970 people registered to run! This event has become the Rotary Club of Hollister's biggest fundraiser and we hope to grow it in the coming years as a must-attend destination event. In 2021 the Rotary Club of Hollister awarded $38,000 in college scholarships and supported numerous community programs, in large part due to funds raised by the Mission 10.
A huge thank you to our Participants, Mission 10 Committee, Sponsors, Volunteers, State Park Staff, City of San Juan Bautista, San Benito County Sheriffs, SBC Fire, KSBW, Benitolink, Freelance, Mission Village Voice and any others we may have missed, for helping make our event a huge success!

Attention High School Seniors: The Rotary Club of Hollister is now seeking applicants for our annual College Scholarship Program. Each year we raise funds to send future leaders to college. We are excited to share the details of District Governor Richard Flanders’ District Wheelchair Drive with you!
As you know, Rotary plays a big part in providing wheelchairs around the globe and we have the chance to make an even bigger impact. The District has a goal of $84,000, however, we are getting a $1 for $1 match from generous contributors, David Behring and Don Routh, so our goal is cut in half!
By the numbers: 2 cities in Mexico 1 container per city 280 wheelchairs per container 560 wheelchairs in total
560 opportunities to make a BIG difference in someone’s life through mobility!
We invite you to be part of this great humanitarian effort. Here’s how:
1. Inspire your fellow club members and others by sharing the wheelchair video on our District website. Warning... it’s a TEARJERKER!
3. Do some prefer to pay by check? We’ve got you! They can use the attached "Wheelchair Gift Acceptance Form".
4. If your club would like to sponsor as a group, please let Brenda Swiney or Amy Neuman know! We’ll note your club’s commitment and work with you on getting the sponsorship completed.
5. THE BEST PART!You can travel with the District to deliver the wheelchairs and personally give mobility to someone who needs it! We are planning two trips, one in March and one during the summer to increase your chances of participating.
We are collecting funds through April 8, 2022.
Please contact Brenda or Amy if there are any other questions.
We look forward to your participation!

Richard Holdaway has been in the construction industry since his youth. Growing up in Gilroy, he started young as an apprentice to his father’s Electrical Contracting company. After serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he returned to the industry. He spent six years as a project manager/superintendent for large home building companies. Needing change in his life, he pursued an opportunity to work for a large catering and property management company in Sweden. He rose through the ranks quickly, eventually standing as Logistics Construction Manager. For nearly 10 years, he held his position and watched that company grow tremendously. Richard is married to Sissela Holdaway. They have three kids, Enya (18), Eli (16), Eila (8). He is bilingual in Swedish, a member of the Hollister Rotary, a member of San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, Captain of the local Bearded Villains Chapter (a charity organization), and an active member in his church. Jennifer E. Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s president for 2022-23, a groundbreaking selection that will make her the first woman to hold that office in the organization’s 115-year history.
Jones will officially become president-nominee on 1 October if no other candidates challenge her.
Jones says she sees Rotary’s Action Plan as a catalyst for increasing Rotary’s impact.
“As we reflect upon our new strategic priorities, we could have never envisioned that our ability to adapt would become our North Star during what is inarguably the most profound time in recent history,” Jones said in her vision statement. “Silver linings rise out of the most challenging circumstances. Using metric-driven goals, I will harness this historic landscape to innovate, educate, and communicate opportunities that reflect today’s reality.”
As the first woman to be nominated to be president, Jones understands how important it is to follow through on Rotary’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Statement. “I believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion … begins at the top and for us to realize growth in female membership and members under the age of forty — these demographics need to see their own reflection in leadership,” Jones said. “I will champion double-digit growth in both categories while never losing sight of our entire family.”
Each year the Rotary Club of Hollister (founded in 1925) supports youth in our community by awarding scholarships to deserving students. The club’s motto is “Service Above Self” and club members work hard to raise funds for scholarships and other community programs. The club’s largest fundraiser is the Mission 10 Race which is scheduled for January 30, 2021 in beautiful San Juan Bautista. Many thanks to all of the Mission 10 supporters over the years, for with your generosity, you are helping send kids to college.

Hollister Rotary awards $32,500 in scholarships to San Benito County 2020 grads
I joined Hollister Rotary in April of 2017 and been a member for 3yrs 4 mos. I served as Vice President-Elect and Rotary Foundation Chair in 2018, Served as Vice President in 2019 and now in 2020 serve as President of the Hollister Rotary club.
Since joining Rotary, I have served every year on the committees in planning and working the Mission 10 Race, our club’s biggest fundraiser for student scholarships. I also volunteered working at the San Benito Rodeo concession stand events, helped out at the 2019 United Way ‘Stuff the Bus’ with student backpacks event and joined the Area 6 clubs’ beautification day planting flower pots at the San Benito Historical Park for the park.
I retired from IBM after 33 years as a Senior Software Engineer and moved to Hollister where I worked as Sr. Software Controls Engineer for two local companies then as Sr. Manufacturing Test Engineer in San Jose. In 2017, I finally retired from the long hard commute and took up volunteer work here in Hollister where I was ‘discovered’ for Rotary membership.
Currently, I serve on the Board of Directors for SBC CASA and am a member of the Hollister Elks Club. I was a member and President of SBC SIR Organization for four years and edited the club’s monthly news letter. I have been married to a wonderful lady for 56 years this December.
My main goal as Rotary President is to grow the membership of this club, hoping to gain more women members and new professionals from all those new houses being built in this county.

A very big thank you to the City of San Juan Bautista, CA State Parks, San Benito Sheriffs Dept, the Mission 10 Committee, our amazing volunteers, and of course all of our participants for making our event another great success. Hollister Rotarians Support Walk a Mile In Her Shoes
Over 765 runners, not including kids for the fun run, came out to support the 2019 Mission 10 Race held on Saturday, January 26, 2019. The race helped to kick off the 150th birthday celebrations for the beautiful and historic City of San Juan Bautista. The skies were clear and the weather could not be more perfect for race day. San Juan Bautista Mayor and SJB Rotarian, Cesar Flores, welcomed runners and participants to the City and issued the start for the first races.
The Mission 10 drew in serious competitors as well as casual runners and first timers. Theme teams came out in some really fun and well thought-out costumes. For many, the Mission 10 has long been and continues to be a training ground for marathon runners. For others the Mission 10 symbolizes something else, whether it is to support local youth scholarships, to begin the new year on a healthy start, or whatever fires you up.
Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored, and helped to make this year’s event such a huge success. Thank you also to Mission 10 Committee, Hollister and San Juan Bautista Rotarians, City of San Juan Bautista, Interact Club, Key Club, Boy Scouts, San Benito County Sheriffs Dept., San Juan Bautista State Park Rangers, Hollister Fire Dept., South Valley Endurance, Mandego Apparel, and anyone else we may have missed for ensuring a successful day. We are very grateful for your support of this event, from which we then award the proceeds as local college scholarships and in support of community service programs. Thank you especially to Bill Tiffany for another outstanding job directing the race.

Tickets are offered on the Alaska website, as well as several consolidators (like Kayak, Expedia, CheapO…). Prices vary between companies, and they vary daily (the farther in advance, the cheaper); expect to pay anywhere between $400 (sooner) and $600 (later). Our nice motel costs around $50/night for a room with two double beds.
The Amecans insist on hosting all of our meals (it’s their culture). There will likely be few other costs.
For questions, check with Peter Anderson at pacificgeo@aol.com or 408-639-3164 . Be sure to let Peter know when you book your flights!

This year’s Rotary International Theme is “Making a Difference.” Each participant must tie their speeches to the theme and include Rotary’s Guiding Principles called the Four-Way Test.
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The next round encompasses Area 6 clubs with winners from each of their clubs. The Rotary Club of Almaden Valley will be hosting the Area 6 Speech contest, March 1st, 6:00pm at Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose. Because of Rotary and its partners, the world has seen a 99% drop in the number of polio cases. But the fight is not over. And we need your help. We ask you to contribute to The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus campaign, so we can reach our goal of complete worldwide eradication of this dread disease.
For the month of June, Rotary District 5170 is conducting a “Flash” campaign - you know, sort of like the “Flash” sales that retailers conduct. We ask that you contribute a one-time $26.50 to The Rotary Foundation, in support of the End Polio Now campaign.
Why $26.50? $26.50 was the amount of the first contribution made to establish The Rotary Foundation for the purpose of doing good in the world, in 1917.These funds will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Where can you get leverage like that in today’s world? Any contribution you make will be matched 2 to 1, by the way.
For those who have not yet contributed a total of $1,000 to become a Paul Harris Fellow, District 5170 will also match any contribution you make with recognition points, to help you achieve that recognition level.
Your contribution will also help your club achieve Every Rotarian Every Year status, which honors clubs in which every member makes at least a $25 contribution to The Rotary Foundation.
If you and your club have already contributed to polio, please take this one extra step and write a $26.50 check in support of this effort. We will let you know how we did when the campaign ends in June.
Warm Rotary Regards,
Ninna Chugh

On Saturday April 22nd, the Rotary Club of Hollister along with San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill and Almaden Valley Rotary Clubs came together to make improvements to San Benito County Historical Park in Tres Pinos.
The Area 6 Community Project at the San Benito County Historical and Recreation Park took place on April 22nd (Earth Day). Area 6 clubs include (Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill and Almaden Valley) The Area 6 clubs formed a collaboration called the Area 6 International Service Committee or (World Community Service 6) over 10 years ago to pool together Rotary District 5170 Designated Funds that come from Rotary International's Foundation contributions. The Rotary Foundation contributions are invested for a 3 year cycle and then allocated back to the clubs in the Districts. Each year the Area 6 International Service Committee funds 2-3 Global Projects around the world, and also funds a community project which rotates each year through the Area 6 clubs. This year it is Hollister's turn. Area 6 club volunteers gathered together to spend their Saturday making upgrades to the Historical Park. We'd like to thank all of our Area 6 Rotarians for your time and financial support of this wonderful project.
Much of the groundwork of construction and planning was put in place by Hollister Rotarian and native Rich Marcus, who graciously took the lead on this project. This year’s Area 6 Improvement Project consisted of constructing a new BBQ area and upgrading an existing building for a serving area adjacent to Dunneville Dance Hall. The Project had several work project days prior to the final Work Day.

President Elect, Amalia Ellis attended Far West PETS in San Jose March 3rd through the 5th, with 420+ other President Elects from Hawaii to California and beyond. PETS is an intensive and inspirational training weekend for all incoming Rotary Presidents who will begin their leadership year on July 1st.
The highlights of PETS for Amalia were:
"Hearing Past Presidents Richard D. King and Cliff Dochtermann speak. It was an honor to have had the opportunity to see both of them speak at PETS. I've been lucky enough to hear them speak at other functions in the past as well."
"Having the opportunity to meet and speak with Incoming Rotary International President, Ian Risely and his wonderful wife Juliet. Ian and Juliet were so warm and friendly. Ian is also a wonderful speaker. I'm very excited about his goals for the upcoming year and how he plans to make a Rotary difference in the world."
"Spending a ton of time learning and networking with other Rotarians and President Elects. It was inspiring and we had a ton of fun too!"
President Elect, Amalia Ellis has been a member of the Hollister Rotary Club since 2013. She has served as the Public Relations Chair and International Service Director for over 3 years. The 2017 District Conference will be held Saturday, May 6 - Sunday, May 7, 2017.
The conference opens with breakfast on Saturday in the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom at The Santa Cruz Boardwalk. We are offering a complete Saturday meal package (Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner) for $100 including a free parking pass. Just add $15 for a pass for all Boardwalk rides on Saturday. Meals may also be purchased separately. Overall conference registration is free.
We were honored to have District Governor Elect, Adewale Ogunbadejo and his wife Funmi from the Rotary Club of Gbagada South in Lagos, Nigeria. They were accompanied by Rotarian Peter Anderson, Rotary Club of Morgan Hill. DG Elect Ogunbadejo came to thank our club for our financial assistance on 2 projects in Lagos. The first, 6 water wells for drinking water. The second project is underway for drinking water and bathrooms for a large school compound with 3,500 students. These projects will impact the communities in Lagos in incredible ways that we take for granted.
We will all travel together so that the Ameca Rotarians need to make only one trip to the airport to pick us up on Friday and one trip to the airport to send us home on Sunday.
Purchase your tickets on these flights from San Jose (SJC) to and from Guadalajara (GDL):
Currently several flight consolidators list these flights at various prices. Prices and availability change constantly (prices always increasing), so book as early as you decide to go. Tickets will go for anywhere between $400 and $700 round trip (on Jan 15, price was $382 round-trip !).
There will be baggage charges, and you will be asked to carry the equivalent of one suitcase of humanitarian goods one-way on the trip down to Guadalajara (school books and/or medical supplies [not medicines] ).
The Amecans will reserve rooms for us in a pleasant hotel on the outskirts of Ameca that we will pay for (around $50/night/room with 2 beds); can be paid with credit card.
There will likely be no other expenses for us, but we want to be good guests, so minor courtesy expenditures may be appropriate. US dollars aren’t universally accepted, so we can exchange for Mexican pesos at the airport (for a fee, of course). US $100 is more than you will need.
This is not a tourism trip. (But it will be a party trip!) We are Rotarian guests of the Rotary Club of Ameca, so certain decorum is expected. They will coordinate and pay for all of our food and activities while we are there, which guarantee to be phenomenally enjoyable and rewarding. We have done this trip many times, and it has never disappointed anyone. The focus of this trip is their 50th Anniversary party, and we will be introduced as honored guests. Gala attire is in order. We will probably also be taken to one of the many Primary Schools where we have donated a total of 178 computers over the past 5 years and also to their Red Cross, where “our” ambulance resides. Expect to be treated like the wonderful, generous benefactors that we are. In both Spanish and English; Spanish language ability is helpful, but not needed.
Before traveling, we will all meet to discuss clothing, culture, food, protocol, and any questions you may have. You need a passport, but no visa is required. To confirm your interest, or if you have any questions, please contact Peter Anderson, Rotary Club of Morgan Hill.
On January 23rd, we inducted new members Dara Tobias, Interim CEO and SBC Fair Director and Dan Brughelli, Owner of Brughelli Electric. Welcome to the family!
Congrats to newest Red Badgers Dara Tobias and Dan Brughelli
Each year, local high school students come to our club to give a Rotary themed speech for the chance of winning money and the possibility to advance to the next round. The next round encompasses Area 6 Clubs with winners from each of their clubs. The winner at that round advances to the District level. Congratulations to all our participants today, who were all inspiring and thoughtful.

Thank you to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors, committee members, timing company (SVE), film crew (CMAP), Sheriff's department and City of San Juan Bautista for another great race in the books, with over 700 participants.
It was a crisp but beautiful day in Historic San Juan Bautista. We had runners who came all the way from Minnesota and Pennsylvania. We had a blind man run the half-marathon with his guide/companion, an 11 year-old boy ran the half-marathon, an elderly couple both completed the half-marathon for the second year in a row, Rotarians from Hollister, Santa Cruz Sunrise and Los Gatos had a friendly competition and people of all ages came for many different reasons.
One thing was clear, everyone seemed to have fun and enjoy themselves. Can't wait to see you all next year!

Hollister Rotary is hoping to encourage mothers to read to their babies at an early age. Literacy starts at birth. Talking to a baby is an important piece of developing a foundation of learning language and vocabulary. Reading to a very young child, before they are 1 yr. old, is a critical element to teaching a child vocabulary. Hollister Rotary has committed to assist each new mom and their newborn child by providing each, at Hazel Hawkins Hospital, with a new book. Our hope is that moms will read to their babies at an early age and continue through the early school years.
Literacy is the key to a successful education in school and through life.

Thank you to Past President (2014-2015) Robert Freiri for taking the charge to organize Cathy Bunks debunking and roast. It is an election year, so naturally the roast took a few funny and awkward cues from the competing candidates for the US presidential race. Thank you to everyone for making it a fun night, especially to those members who participated on the committee. Thank you Cathy Buck for an excellent year of leadership.
The Rotary Club of Hollister was proud to sponsor this year's Stuff the Bus. A program of United Way of San Benito County in partnership with San Benito County Office of Education. Education is an area of focus for Rotarians worldwide in an effort to improve life for all. Stuff the Bus provides backpacks and school supplies to San Benito County County children who might not have the resources to be prepared for school and ready to learn. This year the club also grilled and provided 1000 hot dogs for everyone who came to pick up or drop off school supplies at the Target parking lot on August 6. Thank you to all the members who came out and donated their time for a great cause. Special thanks to member Larry Barr for leading the charge on the grill out.

I am excited to be the 2016-2017 Hollister Rotary President. I was born and raised in Hollister and a proud graduate of Spring Grove Elementary School and San Benito High School. I received my degree from Fresno State and starting my teaching career in Fresno. I returned home in 1990 after marrying my husband and started teaching at my alma matter, San Benito High School. I was blessed with a long and wonderful career as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. I was a part of the San Benito High School staff for 25 years. I was elected as the San Benito County Superintendent of Schools in January, 2015. I am passionate about our community and the education our students receive. This passion carries over as a Rotarian. I look forward to an amazing year with the support of a dynamic board. We are looking forward to building our membership, having fun, and putting together a successful Area 6 project for our community.

Rotary Club of Illorin, Nigeria visits Area 6 Clubs including Hollister Rotary
On April 28th, 2016, the Rotary Club of Hollister had the honor of hosting seven members from our International Service Partner Club of Illorin, Nigeria. In 2014, Area 6 clubs (which include Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill and Almaden Valley) funded and supplied several portable ultrasound machines and heart monitors, in a maternal wing of the Egbe Hospital, in a remote part of Nigeria. This project has resulted in prenatal healthcare and saved lives in an area which did not have access to this kind of care anywhere nearby prior to this partnership. Our Nigerian friends came to express their gratitude and also to attend the Rotary District Conference held that weekend in San Ramon.
The Illorin Rotarians started their day by attending the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista’s weekly breakfast meeting, followed by a tour of the San Juan Mission. Then the Illorin Rotarians headed to Hollister, where they were given a tour of Chamberlain's Children Center and Keith Thompson Non Public School. Several Hollister Rotarians joined the group for a wonderful lunch at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club. After lunch, the Illorin group completed their day in Hollister with a guided tour of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital.
All hands on deck needed for the San Benito County Horse Show and Rodeo, which takes place June 24th - 26th at Bolado Park. This is one of our annual fundraisers and we need all members to help out as well as their family and friends. We will be serving food and beverages in the concession stands once again. For volunteer sign-ups and information please get in touch with Chair Anne Hall.
Rotary Club of Hollister Member Larry Barr Honored with Rotary International's Service Above Self Award
Congratulations to our very own Rotary Club of Hollister’s Larry Barr, who has been selected for Rotary International's Service Above Self Award. The Award was established in 1991 by the Rotary International Board of Directors. Larry was presented with this great honor on April 30, 2016, at the Rotary District 5170 Conference in San Ramon. He was nominated and selected based on his dedication to Youth Service and International Service. Larry has helped build schools and provide computers in remote and poverty stricken areas of the Philippines. He has made multiple trips back to the Philippines with a personal dedication and mission, and has also delivered over forty-thousand toothbrushes, clothing, shoes, and other supplies that we take for granted.
Mr. Barr has been a member of Hollister Rotary since January 1997, and is a Paul Harris Fellow+3. He has long served the youth in our community by serving as the Youth Service Director for the Rotary Club of Hollister, as well as serving as the Youth Services Chair in Rotary’s District 5170, which covers the Bay Area from Oakland down to Hollister. He has been active in promoting and empowering the Interact Club at San Benito High School for many years, which is the High School branch of Rotary, and encouraging Interactors to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leadership camp. He brought the International Student Exchange program to San Benito High School Interactors and has given kids a chance to experience other cultures and countries.
Mr. Barr’s contributions are many, both near and far, and exemplify the Service Above Self Award. This recognition is very well deserved. Well done Larry! We are lucky to have such a wonderful individual in our community.

2016 Area 6 Speech Contest Hosted by Almaden Valley Rotary
Five students from Area 6 clubs represented their clubs at the Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose on March 3, 2016. Each student recited a speech that included this year's theme of Be a Gift to the World and needed to include Rotary's 4 Way Test guiding principles.
This year Morgan Hill's Nikhita Gopisetty took home the First place prize. All of the students did an incredible job and were true winners. We are especially proud of Hollister's own student winner Hernan Chavez. Once again, he commanded the audience with his passionate speech about education as he drew on his own experiences and lessons learned. We are sure Hernan Chavez has a very bright future.
First Place Winner is Nikhita Gopisetty, Morgan Hill
Second place is Phoebe Yin, Almaden Valley
Third place is Hernan Chavez, Hollister
Fourth place Steven Porter, Gilroy
Fifth place Monica Zuchelli, Gilroy Sunrise

Second place winner, and runner up Holly Lompa, and third place winner, Katie Silva, both attend San Benito High School. Both were also awarded cash prizes.

HISTORY MADE AT THE 33RD ANNUAL ROTARY MISSION 10 RACE!
San Juan Bautista, CA -- January 30, 2016 — A record number of over 700 runners came out to support the 2016 Mission 10 Race held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 in lovely San Juan Bautista. Despite an early morning rain, the large crowd was brimming with excitement and energy that mother nature herself couldn’t dampen. The rain soon gave way to perfect spring like weather and set the stage for a truly remarkable event. This was the first year a Half Marathon distance was offered and over 100 participants came out to run the beautiful course that winds through the lush Anzar Hills and along Anzar Lake.
The Mission 10 drew in serious competitors from all over the state and some from much further. Runners John Lee and Aelee Kwon travelled well over 2500 miles from their home in New York City to join our Half-marathon race in preparation for an upcoming marathon in Tokyo, Japan. For many, the Mission 10 has long been and continues to be a training ground for marathon runners. For others the Mission 10 symbolizes something else, as was the case of an inspiring senior couple who despite their age finished the half marathon.
11 Year-Old Bay Area boy, Elliot Daniels, set the USATF world record at Mission 10 for his age group at 1:03:59 for the 10-mile race. It was an amazing moment to witness Daniels cross the finish line with running teammates Garrick Victor Chan and Ernesto Aristeo. Elliot’s father, Brian Daniels, was waiting at the finish line and proudly hoisted his son in the air to celebrate the victory and Elliot’s newly minted record. Daniels has previously broken world records for his age group at the Double Road Race in San Juan Bautista, and a half marathon at the Oakland Running Festival. He ran his first race at the age of 8, coming in 3rd place.
The race also featured elite runner Amy Johnston, 22 from Salinas. Johnston placed second among female 10-milers at a time of (01:02:45). Her most memorable personal race bests are the Salinas Valley Half-Marathon last Fall, San Francisco Distance Carnival 5k (16:52) and Mt. Sac 10k (35:01) last Spring.
Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored, and helped to make this year’s event such a huge success. Thank you also to Mission 10 Committee, Hollister and San Juan Bautista Rotarians, Interacters, Boy Scouts, San Benito County Sheriffs Dept., San Juan Bautista State Park Rangers, Hollister Fire Dept. and anyone else we may have missed for ensuring a successful day. We are very grateful for your support of this event, from which we then award the proceeds as local college scholarships and in support of community service programs. Thank you especially to Bill Tiffany for another outstanding job directing the race.

I hope the year 2015 has been a great year for everyone. I have enjoyed my first six months as your Club President; the time has gone by so quickly. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Thank you all for your support this year.
Even though I am now a non-practicing CPA, my thoughts still shift to thinking about the upcoming tax season, and whether I want to make any last minute tax-deductible expenditures to close out the tax year. As reluctant taxpayers, I know some of you have those same thoughts…how can I avoid paying some of those income taxes.
Well, this year, the Hollister Rotary Club can help you in that regard. We recently established an expendable Rotary Scholarship & Charitable Giving Fund at the Community Foundation for San Benito County, to which you can make a tax-deductible donation at any time. Marilyn Ferreira and Larry Barr will be looking for Scholarship donations in just a few short months, so why not make those donations now and get the tax deduction in 2015 instead of 2016.
I have written step-by-step instructions, attached, that you can follow to make a donation online, or you can write a check, your choice. The point is that it is easy to do, will benefit the Scholarship and Charitable Giving recipients, and your donation is tax-deductible, saving you tax dollars. I hope that you will consider making a year-end donation, but anytime is just great too.

Anne also needs someone who would be willing to contact the wineries for donations, pick them up and deliver to Bolado Park, and be responsible for returning unused donations if necessary. This could be an opportunity for someone who might not be available the actual weekend to participate.

Rotary Club of Hollister Celebrates 90th Anniversary in Gatsby Spirit
We had a fun an festive night on Monday, June 8th celebrating the founding of our club in 1925. The famous book "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald was published in 1925, which was the inspiration for the theme of the celebration. Many members and guests came dressed in the period inspired attire and had a lot of fun in the photo booth.
We learned that Rotary's own Founder Paul Harris was once a Hay Baler. We recognized our longest attending members, Past Presidents and awarded the Rotarian of the Year Award to Past President Jayme Stewart. We heard from and were congratulated by District Governor Ed Jellen. We were graced with the presence of Assistant Governor Gregg Giusiana and his lovely wife Chris, Past District Governor John Fisher, and District Governor Elect Jeff Orth and his lovely wife Barbara. Many others from the community came out to celebrate with us and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

February is Rotary Awareness Month Proclaims Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, FEBRUARY 16, 2015… The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors encouraged all citizens to join them in recognizing Rotary International for its 110 years of service to improving the human condition in local communities around the world, announced Dave Cortese, President.
“It is a great honor to be acknowledged by the SCC Board,” said Ed Jellen. “Every year the collaborative effort of 4,000 Bay Area Rotarians donate on average $1.5 million dollars and thousands of volunteer hours and expertise to help sustain vital community programs.” Jellen is Rotary District 5170 Governor.
The source of project funding begins with the club fundraisers. The events are designed to captivate the interest that best serves the cultural tapestry of our Bay Area neighborhoods.
Funds are allocated to strengthen the capacity of communities by providing scholarships, youth leadership training, art and STEM education in the classroom, computers, books, school supplies, hot breakfasts and luncheons, warm clothing, medical supplies, free health clinics for the uninsured and the global eradication of Polio to mention just a few. At the core of the projects is Rotary’s motto: ‘Service Above Self’

Don't Miss Julie and Scott Jackson Share Great Giant Stories
Julie and Scott Jackson have written and published a book of stories about the Giants baseball team called Great Giants Stories Every Young Fan Should Know. The book goes back to the early days in New York, and covers all the team’s greatest heroes and most memorable moments up through the 2010 and 2012 World Series Champions. Although the book is geared toward young readers, grownups seem to love the book just as much as kids do.
In the last few years, Julie and Scott have spoken at Rotary Club meetings in Gilroy, Morgan Hill, and Milpitas, and have had great receptions there. Rotary members enjoy hearing about how the couple came to write the book, how technology is changing the publishing industry, and how they’re independently marketing and selling the book (more than 3,000 copies sold so far!). Julie also reads a chapter from the book, which is a big hit, especially with the many Giants fans in the audience.

Area 6 Clubs Make a Big Impact in Nigeria and Ghana
Rotarian Peter Anderson of the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill recently spent two weeks in West Africa, specifically in Ghana and Nigeria, checking on two past World Community Service (WCS) grant projects and one on-going WCS grant project, funded in part by clubs in Area 6 of District 5170 and by The Rotary Foundation (TRF). He represented all of the clubs in Area 6 in his work, connecting with the two partner Rotary Clubs with whom we have been working over the past 5 years: Rotary Club of Accra Osu RE, District 9100 (Ghana), and Rotary Club of Gbagada South, District 9110 (Nigeria).
The six wells drilled two years ago to provide "disease-free drinking water" to underserved residents of poor neighborhoods in the large city of Lagos, Nigeria, are all functioning well, and four of them have systems set up by neighborhood leaders to collect fees for water acquired from the wells in order to pay for maintenance and repair of the equipment. Members of our partner club, Gbagada South, will be meeting with neighborhood leaders at the other two well sites to improve their sustainability measures.
Don't miss our special Club Assembly meeting where eleven of our members will be presented with Paul Harris pins by Morgan Hill Rotarian and President Elect, Peter Anderson. Peter will also update the club about his most recent trip to Ghana & Nigeria and the progress of our Area 6 projects there.

Many Rotarians know Annette d. Giacomazzi, a 16 year resident of Hollister. Her volunteer heart is with the YMCA of San Benito County and her local professional career include managing memorable political campaigns, such as ‘NO on G’, ‘Del Webb’ and the ‘Fortino for Supervisor’. Her former business, Ruralnomics, captured data and created strategic plans for local businesses and public institutions. Some of you have golfed with and/or sipped some of her husband, Rick’s, estate grown and bottled wine. Giacomazzi is an Elder at her church, First Presbyterian. They have two teenagers, Max, a 17 year old senior at Palma, and Elli a 15 year old junior at Notre Dame.
CastCoverz! is the leading global manufacturer, e-tailer and innovator of essential orthopedic soft goods (covers for brace, cast, splint and boots). In four short years, CastCoverz! has created 18 branded products, purchased her CrutchWear® and designer colored crutch supplier, is a leading distributor for 4 additional products, and is a local job creator. CCZ! is Ms. Giacomazzi’s 4th business and by far, her most enjoyable. Her “Aha!” moment came when in the fall of 2008, then 10 year-old daughter, Elli, broke her 6th bone. Yes, her 6th. Her first year in business, 2009, was riddled with the “trifecta of adversity,” a failed business partnership, flawed manufactured goods that were not returnable and unsellable, and the diagnosis of a rare breast cancer.
CastCoverz! has been featured in Entrepreneur, Yahoo!, Huffington Post, NY Times, Parenting magazine, dozens of blogs web portal such as About.com, and locally, the Hollister Freelance (October 2013). In addition, Annette and CCZ! were featured in two national best-selling authors books. CCZ! is the quintessential ‘Made-in-the-USA’ family business success story.

Are you having trouble viewing the eBulletin? Does the text seem small or hard to read? Unfortunately not all computers, web browsers, email applications, or monitors are created equal. On that note, I'd like to give you a couple of tips to help enlarge the view.
One of the easiest ways to make your screen bigger while viewing the bulletin is to hit the ZOOM button in your browser or email program. If you can't locate the zoom button hit CONTROL and the + button on your keyboard until it is large enough for your liking.
Or you can simply go look at the news on the website itself by clicking on any of the article headlines/titles.
You can also change your monitor and display settings but beware that this will change your settings across all programs on your computer. Simply right click on your desktop. Go to properties and adjust the font sizes and/or display settings.
If you have any questions or need assistance, please let me know.
I am proud to announce a new biography about Rotary Founder - Paul Harris. The minimum donation to End Polio Now is asked but more is always welcome as we are "this close" to eradicating Polio!!!
Dick Renard will be sharing his experiences, bridging the chasm between the government, non-profit and faith agencies, working together to find collaborative solutions to the issues cities face. He will present 3 key dynamics that are unique to our region; The Community Alliance for Safety and Peace, The Mayor's Luncheon for the Faith Community and Night Walks.
Dick Renard spent 43 years in all things automotive, from racing, to dealerships, to factories, to manufacturing truck components. Leaving business, Dick has taken his "marketplace ministry" from industry, working full time encouraging working relationships between the faith community, government, education and business. With the troubles facing Salinas and similar cities within the greater region, Dick believes the faith community must be engaged to build sustainable bridges that bring hope and a future for those not fully functioning in society.

The YMCA and Hollister Rotary Club have once again joined forces to make a significant impact on our community. All proceeds from this event will stay in San Benito County.
Our guest presenter will highlight the “gang” problem from a national, state and local level, followed by a discussion how communities unwittingly create fertile environments that allow gangs to thrive. Mr. De Vos will share strategies and practices that local leaders and community members can use in order to strengthen the community fabric and make it increasingly difficult for gangs to survive. This presentation will conclude with an overview of local and ongoing efforts to prevent, intervene and suppress gang activity in San Benito County.

Jesaiah Baer has been singing since birth. When she was a newborn, and the
doctor spanked her, instead of crying, she sang a high A. Since then she has
spent many years developing her skills as a singer and performer. She has
performed in solo acts, stage productions, and TV. Jesaiah was just recently
featured on American Idol and got rave reviews from all the critics. Currently
she is the lead singer of her band Smith Alley.
Jesaiah comes from a Show Business background. Her distant uncle was Ramon
Navarro who was known as the Latin Rudolph Valentino. He appeared in over 50
films including Mata Hari and the starring role of the original Ben Hur in
1925. Her distant Aunt was Maria Felix who was one of the biggest stars in
Mexico. But that was a different era. Jesaiah's dream is to bring her
family's star talent into the 21st Century by introducing a jazz music
undertone from their era into a modern Folk/Rock form for today's pop culture.
Don't miss Jessiah share her experiences on July 29th!
July 29, 2013 - Upcoming Speaker: Jesaiah Baer on her RYLA and American Idol Experiences
Family Fellowship with San Jose Giants Celebrating National Spirit of '45 Day. The night will be focused on honoring the WWII generation with festivities including a postgame fireworks show.
Larry made another trip to the Philippines in March, 2013, to speak as the Graduation Ceremony keynote speaker, and will be sharing the progress he saw on the new school, report on the computers donated (a joint project between Hollister Rotary, Hollister High School, Interact Club, and SBC Leadership) and toothbrushes donated.
A new learning center was opened and a clean water system was installed. Also, male and female restrooms were opened (first time ever to have separate gender facilities).
This Rotary sponsored project is a very worthwhile and rewarding endeavor for a very grateful and deserving Philippine population. You will be moved by Larry’s passion for this project and the stories he brings back to us. Don’t miss it!

If you hold it, they will come… and they did come! I don’t know if it was a record for attendance (approximately 20,000 Friday and 40,000 Saturday), but it sure did get crowded in the Beer Garden on Saturday afternoon! And we did pour A LOT of Beer and Jack Daniel’s, running out of Beer choices and many of the hard liquor choices by late afternoon on Saturday.
Again, a BIG Thank You to all of you, your friends, and your family members who helped at the Beer Garden! YOU are what make it a success. But I know you want the numbers, which unfortunately are not finalized as of this date. Bruce reports that we have received checks back for all of our out-of-pocket expenses and he is still working on the getting the final results for us.
Next year, the event will be for three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 4th, 5th, and 6th of July. Mark your calendars now!
Thank You to everyone who participated in this year’s Rodeo fundraiser. GREAT JOB! We had to endure some pretty hot days, grills that did not work, broken freezers, and little or no breeze in the concessions, but we sure sold some food and drinks to the Rodeo crowd that came.
Got some great tips too! Ring the bell for Concession 2, which received the biggest tips for a total of $546, with Concession 1 close behind at $516. Tips collected from all locations totaled $1,083.
Despite the less than ideal conditions, we all had a chance to bond with each other and fellow Rotarian family members and, we served the BEST tri-tip sandwiches in Hollister (technically Tres Pinos, but you know I’m right!). Yeah BBQ crew, great job as always!
As far as the profits go, it looks like we will net $13,658 (including tips) after all expenses.
