Meeting Highlights:

Note:  The Bulletin Editor, Bill Baker, was away so this is bulletin will not have all the regular content.
 
Meeting:
 
The meeting was called to order at 12:15 PM by Past-President Larry Barr.
 
Jeff Modic led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. 
 
Mike Sanchez had the Thought of the Day.
 
Announcements:
 
Larry told the club that we will nominate a philanthropist from our club to help celebrate National Philanthropy Day on November 14th.
 
Rotary and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have announced their relationship will continue. They have agreed that Rotary will raise $50 million a year for three years, and the Gates Foundation will contribute $2 dollars for every $1 from Rotary International. 
 
There will be a Celebration of Life for Past Rotary International President, Richard King, on February 2, 2025 at the Blackhawk Car Museum.  Tickets for the event are $150 each and are tax deductible.
 
Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista will have a Ghost Walk on October 25th and 26th as a fundraiser. Walkers will learn about the many ghosts that are rumored to be in San Juan.

The large deck was worth $76, and Gordon Machado had the winning ticket. He did not pick a winning card but received a bottle of wine.
 
The small deck was worth $104, and Jeff Modic has the winning ticket.  He also did not pick a winning card but received a bottle of wine.
 
Detective:
 
Jeff Modic was the detective for this meeting.  Jeff's topic and asked members present questions about the World Series. Everyone was fined $5 when selected to answer a question, and some members were asked two questions.  Here are some of the questions Jeff asked:
 
Why do they call it the World Series?
The term was first used in 1903, when baseball was hardly played anywhere but in the U.S. The name “World Series” helped promote the event, and they didn't care that it had nothing to do with the rest of the world.
 
Which two teams are playing in the 2024 World Series?
The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers
 
How many times have these two teams played each other in the World Series?
11 and now it will be 12
 
Who won the World Series last year?
TEXAS RANGERS
 
Which team(s) have played in the World Series and never won it?
  • Milwaukee Brewers
  • San Diego Padres
  • Tampa Bay Rays
  • Colorado Rockies
 the Padres and the Rays appearing twice
 
Is there a team that hasn't ever played in a World Series? Who?
The SEATTLE MARINERS are the only MLB franchise that has never appeared in a World Series.
 
Which team has won the most World Series ever? How many?
The NEW YORK YANKEES have won the most World Series wins, with a total of 27.
 
Which team has the most consecutive World Series win? How many?
NEW YORK YANKEES have the most consecutive World Series wins - five in a row from 1949-53.
 
What is the youngest team to win a World Series?
The DIAMONDBACKS are one of the newest teams in the MLB and are the youngest team to win a World Series.
 
What is the oldest team to never win a World Series?
Founded in 1969, The PADRES are MLB's oldest team without a World Series title.
 
Has any team won three World Series in a row? Which ones?
The A's and Yankees are both the only franchises to win at least three straight World Series.
 
Who was the pitcher who won 3 World Series?
Madison Bumgarner has won three World Series championships (2010, 2012, 2014) 
 
Has there ever been a 4-game sweep in the World Series? How many?
A total of 19 World Series have ended in a 4-game sweep, most recently the 2012 series in which the San Francisco Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers.
 
Which player has won the most World Series?
YOGI BERRA has won the most career championships, with 10 championships.

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
 
The program this week was a discussion on Measure A by Bob Tiffany.  Bob presented the arguments FOR and AGAINST Measure A.  Bob made a non-biased presentation, even though he will be voting against the measure.  Thanks, Bob, for updating the club on Measure A.
 
 
 
 
 
NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM
 
Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 28th at Paine's Restaurant.  The program will be a presentation by Kris Mangano, San Benito County Emergency Manager.  Kris will tell us about the Office of Emergency Services (OES) and the services they provide to the county.
