This Week's Program

Bill Baker introduced our guest speaker head football coach of the Hollister High School Haybalers, Bryan Smith.  Bill told the club that Bryan has been in education for 23 years and 20 years as a football coach.  He assumed the head coach responsibilities in 2016.

Bryan first told us about the helmets used by his players.  He told us they coast about $500 each.  Players are allowed to put their award strips by the coaches on one side of the helmet but not the other side.  The other side is reserved for the letter H for Hollister, and the American flag.  Bryan brought a helmet with him to show.

Next Bryan talked about the football program.  He said about 90 players turned out for the team in January but only 60 players could be selected for the team.  He said is a difficult time when the roster has to be cut down to 60 players.  Byran said the learning process for being a varsity football player is very important because this process builds character for the present and the future.  He said he was proud to be involved in this process each year and to have an effect on young men in their high school life and future life. He was also proud of the success some of his players have had in junior college and college.

Next Bryan took "a trip down memory lane" and mentioned the players who had received the Golden Helmet Award since 1955. Some of the names mentioned were familiar to the audience.

Finally, Coach Smith talked about the current season. He mentioned the team won their first game against Branham, lost their second game with Wilcox.  The next game on Friday, Sept. 13th is with Oak Grove at Hollister, and he hoped some of us can attend.  Game time is 7:30.

Coach Smith took questions from the club members about the football program.  It was a very informative presentation.
