Welcome to the Rotary Club of Hollister's weekly bulletin!

This is the bulletin for our meeting on Monday, April 14, 2025

There was no meeting on Monday, April 21 due to the Easter holiday.

Meeting Highlights:
 
Meeting Held at Paine's Restaurant
 
Attendance: 29 Rotarians,  14 Guests
 
 
Meeting:
 
The meeting was called to order by President Larry Barr at 12:05 PM.
 
Kristina Chavez Wyatt led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. 
 
Gene Hopp gave the Thought for the Day.
 
Announcements
 
Larry Barr announced to the club that there would be no meeting next week because of the Easter Break.
 
Larry Barr reminded the club about the upcoming District Learning Assembly for 2025. It will be held on the 26th of April at West Valley College in Saratoga. It will start with breakfast at 8:00 A.M., lunch at
12:00 P.M., and the finals of the Richard D. King Speech Contest. The event will end at 2:00 P.M. and the club will reimburse club members that purchase tickets and attend.
 
Larry then reminded the club about the 100th Anniversary of Rotary Celebration and Dinner to be held on Friday, May 16th at Swank Farm starting at
5 P.M.  Larry said the plans for the program are being developed and Mike Sanchez has agreed to the MC.  Larry said that Robert Rivas, speaker of the California Assembly and a Hollister resident, has agreed to attend.  Other guests are being invited. Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren  and State Senator John Laird have indicated that they will attend if their schedules Permit. We have also invited the Mayor of Hollister, Roxanne Stephens and two County Supervisors; Mindy Sotelo and Angela Curro.
 
Larry also reminded the club of the District Conference to be held at San Jose State University for one day only on May 31, 2025. 
 
 
Raffle by Dave Baumgartner:
 
William Sutton had the winning ticket for the small pot of $148.  Will did not pick the winning card but he did received a bottle of wine.
 
Bryan Yamaoka had the winning ticket for the large pot worth $237.  He did not draw the winning card but he did receive a bottle of wine.
 
Detective:
 
There is no detective for this meeting as our club is running the semifinals for the 43rd Richard D. King Speech Contest.

This Week's Program
 
The Program for today was the 43rd Semi-finals for the Richard D. King Speech Contest. 
 
Several members of our club volunteered to help with the Speech Contest. Harvey Blodgett and Sam Slater volunteered to be the Tellers for the event. Will Sutton Volunteered to be the Official Timer for the event.

We had three outside experienced Speech Judges for the event.
 
The first Judge was Mr. Kevin Mederios, he is Principal for Hollister High School. The next Judge for the event was Ms. Lori Woodle. Lori has been a member of the local Toastmasters Clun for 38-years. Ms. Carmel de Bertaut is a Certified Competant Communicator. She has been certificated by the Toastmasters Club of Salinas and she has an Associates of Arts degree in Communication Studies at West Valley.
 
There were a total of four speakers an they all drew cards with the letters A, B, C. D, and E written on them so that an order of speaking could be determined.
 
They are as follows:
 
Speaker A:  Naiel Chaudry was the first speaker and he was from Mountain View High School.  Neil spoke on, "The ?"
 
Speaker B: Aasma Dhawan was the second speaker and he speech was entitled, "Doggy Disneland."
 
Speaker C: Sravya Varanasi gave a speech entitled, "Scouting for Life." She is from Homestead High School and would like to go to go to the West Point Military Academy. She is the only Junior in the group.
 
Speaker D: Kira McGlashen gave a speech entitled, "The Stone Speech." She is attending Santa Cruz High School and plans on attending Boston University.
 
Each gave their speech and there was absolutely no applause in between speakers.
 
Tellers reported their results as follows:
 
The Finalists were and they received $700.00 each:
 
Naile Chaudry and Kira McGlashen
 
and the Semi-finalists were and they received $300.00 each.:
 
Sravya Varnasi and Aasm Dhawan
 
The Finalist will go to West Valley College to participant in the District Finals on 26 April 2025.
 
If you were not at the meeting, you missed an excellent Program.
 
 
 
 
NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM AND ASSIGNMENTS:
 
Our next meeting is on Monday, April 28th in the back room at Paine's Restaurant.  The meeting will start at 12 Noon and lunch will be available at 11:45 AM.
 
The program for this meeting will be slide presentation by Bill Baker on his recent trip to Japan.  Bill will share pictures of sites and experiences during his two weeks in Japan in early April.
