The meeting was called to order by President Larry Barr at 12:05 PM.
 
Doug Moore led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Announcements
 
 
 


Larry Barr gave a short report about the District Learning Assembly held on the 26th of April at West Valley College in Saratoga. Five members of the Hollister Rotary Club attended: Larry Barr, Mike Sanchez, Bill Baker, Jeff Modic, and Bob Rodgers.
 
 

Larry reminded the club about the 100th Anniversary of Rotary Celebration and Dinner to be held on Friday, May 16th at Swank Farm starting at
5 P.M.  He said invitations had been mailed to all members of the club and asked that members return the RSVP card and payment as soon as possible so plans can be made for the dinner.
 
Larry also reminded the club of the District Conference to be held at San Jose State University for one day only on May 31, 2025. 
 




Larry introduced Tim Newman from the San Benito County Superior Court.  Tim asked members to consider volunteering to serve on the San Benito County Civil Grand Jury.  Applications are not being accepted for the 19 open positions on the grand jury. The term for each juror is 1 year and requires 10-20 hours per week.  Gene Hopp told the group he has been on the jury for 4 terms and finds it to be a very rewarding experience.  Tim passed out cards with a QR code to access the on-line application.
 
Larry Barr also introduced a former member and president of the Hollister Rotary Club, Amalia Andrade.  Amalia has moved back to Hollister from Santa Cruz and intends to renew her membership in our club.  
 
Raffle by Dave Baumgartner:
 
Bill Baker had the winning ticket for the small pot of $162.  Will did not pick the winning card but he did receive a bottle of wine.
 
 Linda Smith had the winning ticket for the large pot worth $293.  He did not draw the winning card but received a bottle of wine.
 


Detective:
 
 
Our detective for this meeting was Bob Rodgers. Bob asked trivia questions about US presidents past and present.  Each member was fined $5 for taking a question.
 
Larry Barr was asked "What did presidents Trump, both Bushes, Reagan, Carter, JFK, FDR, and Pop Francis have in common?"  Larry did not know the correct answer.  They all were Rotarians.
 
Phil Fortino was asked "what president had the longest middle name"? Phil did not know the answer.  It is Biden with a middle name of Robinette.
 
Bob Tiffany was asked "What was the middle name of Harry Truman"? Bob did not know the answer either. The answer is that he did not have a middle name only the letter S.
 
Jim Pleyte was asked "What president had wooden teeth"? Jim guessed George Washington but that was incorrect. No president had wooden teeth, Washington's teeth were dentures made from teeth extracted from slaves and other materials.
 
Bill Baker was asked "Who was the last president to have a beard"?  He guessed incorrectly that it was Abraham Lincoln.  The correct answer was Benjamin Harrison, 1889 to 1893.
 
Kyle Sharp was asked "Who was our shortest president"?.  Kyle did not know the correct answer, James Madison, 5' 4''.
 
Ester Curtice was asked to name the last president to be born in a log cabin.  He answer of Lincoln was wrong. It was James Garfield, who was born in 1831.
 
Make Sanchez was asked "which president was father to 15 children"? Mike did not know the correct answer, John Taylor who had a child at age 70.
 
Gordon Machado was asked to name the first president to server non-consecutive terms?  Gordon learned it was Grover Cleveland, 1885-1889 and 1893-1897.
 
Doug Moore was asked to name the president who had a child born while president.  Doug learned it was Grover Cleveland, a daughter.
 
Rich Marcus was asked "who was the only president married in the White House"?  Rich guessed correctly, Grover Cleveland.
 
Gene Hopp was asked to name the only bachelor president.  Gene learned it was James Buchanan.
 
Chang So was asked to name the president that gave the longest inaugural speech?  Chang did not know it was William Henry Harrison, one hour and 45 minutes.
 
Finally, Crystal Canchola was asked "What president had the shortest term in office"? She learned it was William Henry Harrison, 30 days.

This Week's Program
 
 
The program for today was a presentation by Bill Baker of their recent vacation in Japan.  Bill and Margo were on a cruise on the Oceania Riveria, a 1250 passenger ship.  It was their third cruise with Oceania that prides itself with fine dining and service.
 
Bill showed slides on the various ports and places of interest the ship stopped at including Nagoya, Kochi, Busan, South Korea, Hiroshima, Beppu, Nagasaki, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Shimizu, and Tokyo. 
 
Bill showed slides of the stone Usuki Stone Buddhas, the royal palace in Osaka, the atomic bomb peace parks in Nagasaki, and Hiroshima and described the museum in Nagasaki that told of the bombing.  
 
He also showed slides and a video of the fish market in Busan that is the largest fish markets in South Korea.  He showed a video of the dissection of a Blue Fin Tuna that was estimated to be worth $2000.  Blue Fin tuna is a delicacy for sushi in Japan. 
 
Bill showed slides of the Oska Castle and pictures of Japanese in their native kimonos.  He finished with slides of sites in Tokyo like the Empera's Palace the famous big six way street crossing called the Shibuya, and the Nakamise shopping district.
 
After the slide show, Bill took questions from the club on food in Japan, and impressions of the country and people.
 
 
 
 
 
 
NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAM AND ASSIGNMENTS:
 
Our next meeting is on Monday, May5th in the back room at Paine's Restaurant.  The meeting will start at 12 Noon and lunch will be available at 11:45 AM.
 
The program for this meeting will be an update by Sheriff Eric Taylor of the Sheriff's office operations, staffing levels, the budget and new programs he is implementing.
