Volume 2 | Issue 21

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Hollister's weekly bulletin!

This is the bulletin for our meeting on Monday, July 15, 2024

Meeting Highlights:

Meeting Held at Paine's Restaurant

Attendance: 22 Rotarians and 1 guest

Visiting Rotarians:  Tami Aviles, Rotary Club of China Town, San Francisco who will be transferring to Hollister Rotary Club.

Meeting:

The meeting was called to order by President Larry Barr at 12:15.

Doug Moore led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Bill Tiffany gave the Thought for the Day.

Announcements:

Larry Barr asked past president Rich Marcus to come forward. Larry presented Rich his new Past President badge and a plaque with a gavel recognizing Rich's term as president of the Hollister Rotary Club. Rich then thanked the club for their cooperation and support during the past year.  Rich received a standing ovation after his remarks.

Larry asked Bryan Yamaoka to give an update on the results of the Saddlehorse Show and Rodeo.  Bryan reported that we will probably net $9,000 after the unsold beer is returned.  This result was lower than in previous years and could be the result of competition from another vendor selling beer, and the new VIP area that provided beer and cocktails to members.  Bryan thanked all the members and quests that came out to volunteer their time for the event.

Larry informed the club that the board had approved a $2500 donation to the United Way of San Benito in support of the Stuff the Bus event.  Stuff the Bus will be on Saturday, August 3rd from 9 to 11 AM in the Target parking lot.  We will need volunteers to help distribute hot dogs and water to the kids.

Larry announced that new District 5170 Governor, Jill Duerig, will be visiting our club on July 29th.  Jill will be the program for that meeting.

Larry also announced that a Ceremony of Life for Past Rotary International President Richard King will be held on February 2, 2025 at the Blackhawk Car Museum.

Larry told the club that a Hollister Rotary Board meeting will be held after our meeting today.

Gene Hopp was asked the name of the first public school in the US.  He paid $5 fine to learn it was the Boston Latin School in Massachusetts.

Mike Sanchez was asked was the first college in the US and in what year.  Mike was fined $5 to learn it was Harvard College in 1636.

Doug Moore was asked what the name of the first woman college was and when was it founded.  He paid $5 fine because he did not know it was Wesleyan in Connecticut in 1836.

Rich Marcus was asked to name the original name of the PTA and when was it founded.  He paid $5 fine to learn it was the National Congress of Mothers in 1897.

Byran Yamaoka was asked what year was the SAT started.  The answer was 1926 and Bryan was fined $5.

Harvey Blodget was asked when the first computer was created.  It was 1946 and Harvey paid a $5 fine.

Welcome back Bill and great job as detective!

This Week's Program

The program for this week was presented by Larry Barr who told us about his trip Manilla, Philippines and Singapore to attend the Rotary International Convention.  Jeff Modic accompanied Larry on the trip.

First, they went to Manilla to distribute toothbrushes, Mission 10 shirts and Mission 10 medals to children.  Larry showed pictures of the children receiving the gifts and commented about how proud they were to have a medal to wear.

Next, Larry and Jeff flew to Singapore to attend the Rotary International Convention.  Larry shared pictures with us of their meetings with other Rotarians from Ukraine and other countries.

Jeff Modic commented on the value of attending a Rotary International Convention especially with a "rock star" like Larry Barr who has many friends in Rotary.  Jeff helped Larry with distribution of the gifts to the children in the school in Manilla.

Jeff reminded the club that the next Rotary International Convention will in Calgary, Canada in 2025 and urged other club members to try attend.
