This Week's Program

Our program this week was a presentation by Robin Schweiger, Site Director with Charles River Labs located in Hollister near the airport.  Charles River Labs has been in business for 75 years and was started by Dr. Henry Foster to breed rats and mice that were raised in a defined environment for research purposes. In 2023, 87% of the drugs approved by the FDA involved rats or mice developed by Charles River Labs.

The Hollister facility was built in 1993 to provide Basic Research.  In 2000 they added the surgical services, and in 2007 they doubled the capacity.  In 2020 and 2021 they added the genetically engineered models. And, in 2024 the expanded to a satellite location in San Diego. In 2025 they will add humanized mice to the product line.

Charles River Labs pillar of focus is Animal Welfare, Ver Services, Biosecurity, and Health Monitoring.   The also place importance on people by providing development of their employees and community engagement.

Robin also took questions from the club. It was a very interesting presentation.
