Each year, local high school students come to the Rotary Club of Hollister to give a Rotary-themed speech for the chance of winning money and the chance to advance to the next round at the area and district levels. This year’s Rotary International Theme is “Making a Difference.” Each participant must tie their speeches to the theme and include Rotary’s Guiding Principles called the Four-Way Test.
The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:
Of the things we think, say or do
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
The next round encompasses Area 6 clubs with winners from each of their clubs. The Rotary Club of Almaden Valley will be hosting the Area 6 Speech contest, March 1st, 6:00pm at Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose. The winner at that round advances to the District 5170 level competition to be held at noon on April 14th at West Valley College in Saratoga.
Here are the winners of this year’s Richard D. King Youth Speech Contest:
1st place: Stevi Ray Page 2nd place and runner up: Ian Sills
Congratulations to Vivian Hernandez and Hannah Higgins who also participated in the 2018 Richard D. King Youth Speech Contest. Everyone did an outstanding job and all the students were winners in our eyes.
Rotarians will be partnering with the Hollister Downtown Association for the Downtown Spring Cleanup. A community supported cleanup of downtown, including pulling weeds, planting, scrubbing and painting. Bring your brooms, dustpans, garden gloves and shovels and help us get our downtown in tip-top shape!
Volunteer for this annual event by emailing Jeana Arnold at the HDA or calling 831.636.8406 and let her know that you are volunteering for Rotary.
Laundry to Literacy, a program through the Women's Club of Hollister, provides books in English and Spanish in each laundry mat and families can take them for free. We Rotarians will be collecting books through the month of March (literacy month) to help this great program.
The Women's Club is asking for children’s books (not adult books) ages pre-school to high school age appropriate. They can be gently used or new. Please bring your books to Krystal Lomanto who will be collecting the books for our club.
All Red Badgers, Directors and Incoming Directors should attend this important training. More information will be coming soon. RSVP to President Ellis.
High school students in San Benito County are encouraged to apply for the Rotary Club of Hollister's annual college scholarship program.
Each year, the Rotary Club of Hollister raises funds to send future leaders to college. We believe that our future is in our youth and value the investment to make our world a better place with educational boosts. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2018.
There's a world of opportunity waiting for you at the Rotary convention.
