High school students in San Benito County are encouraged to apply for the Rotary Club of Hollister's annual college scholarship program.
Each year, the Rotary Club of Hollister raises funds to send future leaders to college. We believe that our future is in our youth and value the investment to make our world a better place with educational boosts. Application Deadline is March 31, 2017.

The Area 6 Community Project atthe San Benito County Historical Park is fast approaching. Area 6 clubs include (Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill and Almaden Valley) The Area 6 clubs formed a collaboration called the Area 6 International Service Committee or (World Community Service 6) over 10 years ago to pool together District Designated Funds that come from your Rotary International contributions. The RI contributions are invested for a 3 year cycle and then allocated back to the clubs in the Districts. Each year the Area 6 International Service Committee funds 2-3 Global Projects around the world, and also funds a community project which rotates each year through the Area 6 clubs. This year it is Hollister's turn, so let's unite in service and show the community our dedication here locally and globally. Remember that these projects are made possible by YOUR Rotary International Contributions.
The main project work day will be Saturday April, 22, 2017. 9am-3pm +/-
Please mark your calendars and start recruiting friends and family. Please contact Rich Marcusrichmarcus@sbcglobal.netif you are able to help with construction prep days. We specifically need help with masonry, some grading, trenching, electrical, and a few other items.
We will all travel together so that the Ameca Rotarians need to make only one trip to the airport to pick us up on Friday and one trip to the airport to send us home on Sunday.
Purchase your tickets on these flights from San Jose (SJC) to and from Guadalajara (GDL):
Currently several flight consolidators list these flights at various prices. Prices and availability change constantly (prices always increasing), so book as early as you decide to go. Tickets will go for anywhere between $400 and $700 round trip (on Jan 15, price was $382 round-trip !).
There will be baggage charges, and you will be asked to carry the equivalent of one suitcase of humanitarian goods one-way on the trip down to Guadalajara (school books and/or medical supplies [not medicines] ).
The Amecans will reserve rooms for us in a pleasant hotel on the outskirts of Ameca that we will pay for (around $50/night/room with 2 beds); can be paid with credit card.
There will likely be no other expenses for us, but we want to be good guests, so minor courtesy expenditures may be appropriate. US dollars aren’t universally accepted, so we can exchange for Mexican pesos at the airport (for a fee, of course). US $100 is more than you will need.
This is not a tourism trip. (But it will be a party trip!) We are Rotarian guests of the Rotary Club of Ameca, so certain decorum is expected. They will coordinate and pay for all of our food and activities while we are there, which guarantee to be phenomenally enjoyable and rewarding. We have done this trip many times, and it has never disappointed anyone. The focus of this trip is their 50th Anniversary party, and we will be introduced as honored guests. Gala attire is in order. We will probably also be taken to one of the many Primary Schools where we have donated a total of 178 computers over the past 5 years and also to their Red Cross, where “our” ambulance resides. Expect to be treated like the wonderful, generous benefactors that we are. In both Spanish and English; Spanish language ability is helpful, but not needed.
Before traveling, we will all meet to discuss clothing, culture, food, protocol, and any questions you may have. You need a passport, but no visa is required. To confirm your interest, or if you have any questions, please contact Peter Anderson, Rotary Club of Morgan Hill.
The 2017 District Conference will be held Saturday, May 6 - Sunday, May 7, 2017.
The conference opens with breakfast on Saturday in the Cocoanut Grove Ballroom at The Santa Cruz Boardwalk. We are offering a complete Saturday meal package (Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner) for $100 including a free parking pass. Just add $15 for a pass for all Boardwalk rides on Saturday. Meals may also be purchased separately. Overall conference registration is free.
We were honored to have District Governor Elect, Adewale Ogunbadejo and his wife Funmi from the Rotary Club of Gbagada South in Lagos, Nigeria. They were accompanied by Rotarian Peter Anderson, Rotary Club of Morgan Hill. DG Elect Ogunbadejo came to thank our club for our financial assistance on 2 projects in Lagos. The first, 6 water wells for drinking water. The second project is underway for drinking water and bathrooms for a large school compound with 3,500 students. These projects will impact the communities in Lagos in incredible ways that we take for granted.
On January 23rd, we inducted new members Dara Tobias, Interim CEO and SBC Fair Director and Dan Brughelli, Owner of Brughelli Electric. Welcome to the family!
Each year, local high school students come to our club to give a Rotary themed speech for the chance of winning money and the possibility to advance to the next round. The next round encompasses Area 6 Clubs with winners from each of their clubs. The winner at that round advances to the District level. Congratulations to all our participants today, who were all inspiring and thoughtful.

Thank you to Gracie Bolin-Mansmith, Vivian Hernandez, Noah Janzing, Holly Lampa, Megan Matthews, Hailey Robledo, Ian Sills, Katie Silva, and Isabella Veglia for inspiring us and making us proud with your awesome speeches. We are lucky to have such amazing youth leaders in our community.
Thank you to all the participants, volunteers, sponsors, committee members, timing company (SVE), film crew (CMAP), Sheriff's department and City of San Juan Bautista for another great race in the books, with over 700 participants.
It was a crisp but beautiful day in Historic San Juan Bautista. We had runners who came all the way from Minnesota and Pennsylvania. We had a blind man run the half-marathon with his guide/companion, an 11 year-old boy ran the half-marathon, an elderly couple both completed the half-marathon for the second year in a row, Rotarians from Hollister, Santa Cruz Sunrise and Los Gatos had a friendly competition and people of all ages came for many different reasons.
One thing was clear, everyone seemed to have fun and enjoy themselves. Can't wait to see you all next year!
