33rd Annual Rotary Mission 10 Race a Huge Success

HISTORY MADE AT THE 33RD ANNUAL ROTARY MISSION 10 RACE!

San Juan Bautista, CA -- January 30, 2016  — A record number of over 700 runners came out to support the 2016 Mission 10 Race held on Saturday, January 30, 2016 in lovely San Juan Bautista. Despite an early morning rain, the large crowd was brimming with excitement and energy that mother nature herself couldn’t dampen. The rain soon gave way to perfect spring like weather and set the stage for a truly remarkable event. This was the first year a Half Marathon distance was offered and over 100 participants came out to run the beautiful course that winds through the lush Anzar Hills and along Anzar Lake.

The Mission 10 drew in serious competitors from all over the state and some from much further. Runners John Lee and Aelee Kwon travelled well over 2500 miles from their home in New York City to join our Half-marathon race in preparation for an upcoming marathon in Tokyo, Japan. For many, the Mission 10 has long been and continues to be a training ground for marathon runners. For others the Mission 10 symbolizes something else, as was the case of an inspiring senior couple who despite their age finished the half marathon.

11 Year-Old Bay Area boy, Elliot Daniels, set the USATF world record at Mission 10 for his age group at 1:03:59 for the 10-mile race. It was an amazing moment to witness Daniels cross the finish line with running teammates Garrick Victor Chan and Ernesto Aristeo. Elliot’s father, Brian Daniels, was waiting at the finish line and proudly hoisted his son in the air to celebrate the victory and Elliot’s newly minted record. Daniels has previously broken world records for his age group at the Double Road Race in San Juan Bautista, and a half marathon at the Oakland Running Festival. He ran his first race at the age of 8, coming in 3rd place.

The race also featured elite runner Amy Johnston, 22 from Salinas. Johnston placed second among female 10-milers at a time of (01:02:45). Her most memorable personal race bests are the Salinas Valley Half-Marathon last Fall, San Francisco Distance Carnival 5k (16:52) and Mt. Sac 10k (35:01) last Spring.

Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, sponsored, and helped to make this year’s event such a huge success. Thank you also to Mission 10 Committee, Hollister and San Juan Bautista Rotarians, Interacters, Boy Scouts, San Benito County Sheriffs Dept., San Juan Bautista State Park Rangers, Hollister Fire Dept. and anyone else we may have missed for ensuring a successful day. We are very grateful for your support of this event, from which we then award the proceeds as local college scholarships and in support of community service programs. Thank you especially to Bill Tiffany for another outstanding job directing the race.

Rotary Club Honors Local Speech Contest Winners

Rotary Club Honors Speech Contest Winners

Rotary Club of Hollister held its Richard D. King  Annual Youth Speech Contest on Monday, January 25, 2016. Ten students from San Benito High School and Pinnacles Community School competed in the contest this year. Hernan Chavez, who attends Pinnacles Community School, took first place in the contest and was awarded $100. Second place winner, and runner up Holly Lompa, and third place winner, Katie Silva, both attend San Benito High School. Both were also awarded cash prizes.

All speeches needed to be the original work of the students and this year’s theme, “Be a Gift to the World,” had to be incorporated into the speech.

Within the District, Clubs are grouped into nine Areas, with three to nine Clubs in each Area.  Every Club Level winner will compete with the winners from the other clubs in that Area. The first place winner will be selected to participate in the Regional Level competition, with other contests in the Rotary District.
