Rotary Club of Hollister Member Larry Barr Honored with Rotary International's Service Above Self Award
Congratulations to our very own Rotary Club of Hollister’s Larry Barr, who has been selected for Rotary International's Service Above Self Award. The Award was established in 1991 by the Rotary International Board of Directors. The Service Above Self Award is Rotary International’s highest honor for an individual Rotarian who embodies Rotary’s motto “Service Above Self”, by demonstrating their continuing humanitarian service efforts and involvement in helping others. This is an internationally competitive award, with a maximum of 150 recipients selected worldwide each year. There are over 1.2 million Rotary Members, in over 34,000 Rotary Clubs, in over 200 countries.
Larry was presented with this great honor on April 30, 2016, at the Rotary District 5170 Conference in San Ramon. He was nominated and selected based on his dedication to Youth Service and International Service. Larry has helped build schools and provide computers in remote and poverty stricken areas of the Philippines. He has made multiple trips back to the Philippines with a personal dedication and mission, and has also delivered over forty-thousand toothbrushes, clothing, shoes, and other supplies that we take for granted.
Mr. Barr has been a member of Hollister Rotary since January 1997, and is a Paul Harris Fellow+3. He has long served the youth in our community by serving as the Youth Service Director for the Rotary Club of Hollister, as well as serving as the Youth Services Chair in Rotary’s District 5170, which covers the Bay Area from Oakland down to Hollister. He has been active in promoting and empowering the Interact Club at San Benito High School for many years, which is the High School branch of Rotary, and encouraging Interactors to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leadership camp. He brought the International Student Exchange program to San Benito High School Interactors and has given kids a chance to experience other cultures and countries.
Mr. Barr’s contributions are many, both near and far, and exemplify the Service Above Self Award. This recognition is very well deserved. Well done Larry! We are lucky to have such a wonderful individual in our community.
Rotary Club of Illorin, Nigeria visits Area 6 Clubs including Hollister Rotary
On April 28th, 2016, the Rotary Club of Hollister had the honor of hosting seven members from our International Service Partner Club of Illorin, Nigeria. In 2014, Area 6 clubs (which include Hollister, San Juan Bautista, Gilroy, Gilroy Sunrise, Morgan Hill and Almaden Valley) funded and supplied several portable ultrasound machines and heart monitors, in a maternal wing of the Egbe Hospital, in a remote part of Nigeria. This project has resulted in prenatal healthcare and saved lives in an area which did not have access to this kind of care anywhere nearby prior to this partnership. Our Nigerian friends came to express their gratitude and also to attend the Rotary District Conference held that weekend in San Ramon.
The Illorin Rotarians started their day by attending the Rotary Club of San Juan Bautista’s weekly breakfast meeting, followed by a tour of the San Juan Mission. Then the Illorin Rotarians headed to Hollister, where they were given a tour of Chamberlain's Children Center and Keith Thompson Non Public School. Several Hollister Rotarians joined the group for a wonderful lunch at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club. After lunch, the Illorin group completed their day in Hollister with a guided tour of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital.
